Puzzle mugs were a type of drinking puzzle known to Western Europeans. They were popular between the sixteenth and eighteen centuries. These clay vessels sabotage the drinker with an internal “plumbing” system that can feed into a number of holes on the lip (and sometimes in the handle). The trick is to suck at the right hole while keeping the right number of other holes closed with one’s fingers. They supplied much entertainment in pubs and taverns. Many examples exist with poems either inscribed or painted on the sides.
This was in keeping with the custom of the time, in which many English pottery vessels of the period, from chamber pots to sugar containers, contained rhyming couplets inscribed on the side, in line with the fun nature of the game..

Questi vasi di argilla sabotano il bevitore con un sistema "idraulico" interno che può alimentare una serie di fori sul bordo (e talvolta nel manico).
